Regardless I still ran a new personal best...woohoo! I had my bagel with peanut butter and banana at 6:30 when I got up. A coffee and a large glass of water. Then at 9 I had a Powerbar to tide me over till race time (11am). My goal was sub-45mins and if I wasnt able to manage that I wanted to beat my last years time of 46:30. I had tried sub-45 (which is 7:13 mins/miles) at one other 10k and couldnt pull it off so I wasnt sure it was going to happen.
There was about 500 racers and the weather was great! About 6 degrees and sunny. I decided at the last minute to wear shorts and I'm glad I did. The first mile is always the quickest for me as I'm full of nerves and energy. I averaged 6:41, then the next was 7:09, the third mile was the hardest with more hills and I averaged 7:18. I got a little worried at that point that maybe I was going to run out of steam. But mile 4 I did at 7:12 and about halfway through mile 5 when I was still below pace I knew I could hold on. Mile 5 was 7:10 and mile 6 was 7:02. I ended up finishing at 44mins and 26 seconds. Yay! met goal and took 2 mins off last years time. My only down side was my running rival passed me in the last 500m and beat me by 17 seconds...oh well I kept telling myself "its a personal challenge."
Last year I would have won my age division with that time, but this year a few speed demons aged in to my age class (darn...lol) so I placed 7th, but I'll take it :) It was a great day, I am sore and definitely pushed myself and am happy with my time!
